Trouble Shooting


Drilling rock is a very difficult process and during drilling some problems with hammers might be faced. In order to avoid such problem the following precautions are taken

Compressor Output is Checked for
Temperature & altitude are adjusted
Air pressure is checked with pressure gauge
Air filters are checked
Minimum Level of rock oil is maintained

Drill Rods are Checked for
Air leakage’s throughout
Pressure loss in hose

Weight on bit is checked for
Feed cylinder dropping
Proper rotation & feed


Control tube is checked for
Correct diameter and height
Chips at internal diameter
Burrs on outer diameter

Check valve is checked for
Proper seating

Level of rig is checked for
Level jacks leakage
Hydraulic pressure dropping at valve end


Problem Cause Solution
Thread Locking Insufficient Lubrication
  Use proper amount &type of thread lubricants
  Damaged thread
Thread breakage Improper or damaged mating parts
  Check the mating parts with api thread gauge
Threads rust
  Maintain Proper Rust Preventive Oil
Operated with damaged threads
  Check the mating parts
Outer Diameter Body
Wear Out
Abrasive formation
  Increase hole cleaning
  Avoid the wear out bits
Body cut Damaged threads
  Remove the threads burrs

Hammer Case

Problem Cause Solution
Thread locking Insufficient lubrication
  Use proper amount & type of thread lubricants.
Thread breakage/Crack Improper or damaged mating
parts Denting at hammer case
  Check the mating parts with API thread gauge
  Open proper breakout tools
  Do not open with heat & hit
Threads rust
  Maintain proper rust prevent oil
Operated with damaged threads
  Check the mating parts
Od Body Wear Out Abrasive formation
  Increase hole cleaning
  Avoid the wear out bits
Body Cut Damaged threads
  Remove the threads burs
  To check control tube seating face perpendicular to honing bore in hammer case
Crack at Front Chuck End Case worn below acceptable limit
  Use new bit
  Replace hammer case
Id Wear Out Insufficient lubrication
  Use proper amount & type of lubricants
  To check compressor filter
  To clean hammer case before assy
  To check control tube id
  To check coupler id
  To check drill rods id
  Cap drill rods after use
Foreign material contamination

Check Valve

Problem Cause Solution
Not sealing Worn or cut seal surface
(Spring tension may less)
  Replace check valve
  Replace spring
Melting Heavy temperature
  Check compressor out put temperature
  Use proper amount & type of lubricants

Control Tube

Problem Cause Solution
Od Rubbing Insufficient lubrication
  Use proper amount & type of lubricants
  To check compressor filter
  To clean hammer case before assy
  To check control tube id
  To check coupler id
  To check drill rods id
  Cap drill rods after use
  Replace worn partsPin taper (digger)
  Control tube seating in hammer case (tiger)
Foreign material contamination
Work piston od hammer case
ID Misalignment
Cracked or Broken Heavy friction
  Foreign material keep out
  Use proper amount & Type of lubricants
  Maintain proper alignment
  Use proper amount & type of lubricants
Rust

Piston

  Use proper amount & type of lubricants.
  To check compressor filter
  To clean hammer case before assy.
